Curriculum at Mount Molloy State School
At Mount Molloy State School, we deliver a high-quality, evidence-based curriculum that builds strong foundations in Literacy, Numeracy and Science, while fostering curiosity, creativity and a love of learning. Our approach combines explicit instruction with engaging, real-world learning experiences to ensure every student is supported to succeed.
Literacy
At Mount Molloy State School, Literacy is a key priority and is taught through a structured, explicit and systematic approach.
Whole-class reading lessons are used to model essential skills and comprehension strategies, which students then practise in targeted guided reading groups and specialised lessons. These groups are based on student need and are supported by teachers and teacher aides to ensure every learner is appropriately challenged and supported.
Writing is taught explicitly, with a strong focus on the language features and structure of different text types. Reading and writing are closely linked to strengthen student understanding and improve overall outcomes.
In the early years, we implement Little Learners Love Literacy as our Prep–Year 2 synthetic phonics program. This is complemented by Heggerty Phonemic Awareness, which provides daily, structured lessons targeting essential phonemic awareness skills.
Students are also provided with opportunities to extend their reading skills through participation in events such as the Regional Readers Cup, showcasing their comprehension and teamwork.
Mathematics
Mathematics is taught using explicit instruction to introduce and reinforce key concepts.
Students engage in:
Whole-class teaching to build understanding
Hands-on learning using concrete materials
Collaborative problem-solving and discussion
Digital tools and resources
Independent practice and consolidation
We place a strong emphasis on students explaining their thinking, exploring multiple strategies, and applying their knowledge in real-life contexts and investigations. This approach develops deep understanding, confidence and mathematical reasoning.
