Literacy
Students learn about English in a variety of ways at our school. Whole class reading activities demonstrate to the student's skills and comprehension strategies to practice in guided reading groups and specialised lessons. These groups are ability based which have a teacher or teacher aide to guide the learning of the students.
Whole class writing activities demonstrate to the students the language and features of the genre they are learning about. There is a link between the reading and writing activities to improve student learning. At Mount Molloy State School, we use Thrass as our school phonics program in conjunction with Phonemic Awareness: The Skills That They Need to Help Them Succeed! by Dr Michael Heggerty provides daily word play activities focusing on ten different phonemic awareness skills in every lesson, and is implemented in the Prep-1 classroom throughout the entire school year. We endeavor to compete annually in the Regional Readers Cup to showcase our reading and comprehension skills in the public domain.
MATHEMATICS
Students learn about Mathematics in a range of ways. Whole Explicit class lessons are used to introduce or reinforce concepts and Students then practice these concepts using hands on materials, peer collaboration, discussion, resources on the computer and consolidation using a text book.
Students are given the opportunity to discuss their learning and find out about the different ways a solution is found. Student knowledge and understanding of concepts is used in purposeful mathematical activities, real life situations and investigations.
SCIENCE
Students learn about science through the National Curriculum. This allows the students to use their scientific knowledge, curiosity, senses and intuition as a basis for investigating and testing their scientific thinking about the world.
Computer Education
All children from Prep to Year 6 are engaged in computer work including digital camera activities and controlled Internet research. Parents are encouraged to be trained as assistants in the classroom. It is a lot of fun and very rewarding. From 2020, our school will be conducting NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3 and 5 online.
Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)
The humanities and social sciences is the study of human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic, and political contexts.
The humanities and social sciences have a historical and contemporary focus, from personal to global contexts, and considers challenges for the future.
The HASS subjects provide a broad understanding of the world in which we live. HASS investigates how people can participate as active and informed citizens with high-level skills needed for the twenty-first century. In the Australian Curriculum, the Humanities and Social Sciences learning area comprises four subjects: History, Geography, Economics and Business, Civics and Citizenship
STEM
STEM activities (Science Technology Engineering and Math) are the buzz in education. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. Engineering is the basic designs of roads and bridges but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and environmentally-friendly changes to our home. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives. By exposing students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will develop a passion for it and students in 5/6 will have opportunity to create and explore challenges each week to develop creative "out of the box" thinking to solve problems through design and collaborative thinking with peers.
